Proverbs

Assalamualaikum My Beloved students

How are you? I hope all of you are doing great.

Do you know proverb? Yes? or No?

If yes, give me an example. If no, well here are some examples.

Examples:

- Practice makes perfect
- Early bird catches the most worm
etc

"A proverb (from the Latin proverbium), also called a byword or nayword, is a simple and concrete saying popularly known and repeated, which expresses a truth, based on common sense or the practical experience of humanity. They are often metaphorical. A proverb that describes a basic rule of conduct may also be known as a maxim. If a proverb is distinguished by particularly good phrasing, it may be known as an aphorism.

Proverbs are often borrowed from similar languages and cultures, and sometimes come down to the present through more than one language. Both the Bible (Book of Proverbs) and medieval Latin have played a considerable role in distributing proverbs across Europe, although almost every culture has examples of its own" (taken from Wikipedia)

Most proverbs are metaphorical. but they are some that are Hyperbole, Paradox and Personification.

Examples:

  • Hyperbole - All is fair in Love and War
  • Paradox - For there to be peace there must first be war
  • Personification - Hunger is the best cook
What do you think of proverb?
  1. Is there any English Proverb that has the same meaning with the Indonesian Proverb?
  2. Do you know some more proverbs with their meaning?
Answer the 2 questions above in our next meeting. See you in the class. Don't forget to prepare your book before you go to sleep ok. Nighty Nite Students.
