English Idioms

How are you students?

Hope you are all in great conditions. Have u read about the material on Proverbs? I won't explain that in Class. You should study from my blog, but I will provide you with the copy of some proverbs when we finish our 1st quiz, okay.

So, another additional material is English Idioms. Do you know any?

We start about the meaning of Idiom. Does anyone know the meaning????? Raise your hand :) ... Nobody knows? Okay, let me explain.

Definiton of idiom which I copied from wikipedia that an idiom is a phrase whose meaning cannot be determined by the literal definition of the phrase itself, but refers instead to a figurative meaning that is known only through common use.

in other words, idiom is a group of some words whose meaning are not word by word but it has its own meaning when those words are put together. Understand? No? Okay here are some examples

  • It's a piece of cake : The bold red words are called idiom. The meaning is not really a piece of cake that you can eat. It means It's very easy
  • His story is such a shaggy-dog story : it means a long drawn-out story with silly ending
I hope that you understand about idioms. You can find out more examples on idioms at :

That's all for the additional explanation today. Remember, though I won't explain in the class, this material will still be tested and can add additional score for you.

See you in the next material...
